A cue is like an extension to your arm for many players. Some people keep their's for years while others replace them every 6 months. How long have you owned your current cue?

  Men's Squad Retention System
by: Rupe, 05-03-2014 12:03 PM (#1)

The Retention Points system for the Men's squad is now ready, you can
read it here and see it in action here.

The results for the first match of the season have been entered. If you
want to see how things will look as the season progresses, there is a
link to some example/test data towards the bottom of the page.

This is the result of a lot of thought and testing and input from a significant
number of people.

The basic idea is that players earn points which go towards deciding who has
to re-trial at the end of the year, and that they can do so through commitment
and dependability as well as performance.

Players will also have to attend 7 matches to be retained (England players
necessarily excepted).

We hope that this will go a long way towards making the process of retention
and re-trialling more transparent.

The document will hopefully be self-explanatory but please feel free to ask
any questions. Any clarifications and corrections that are required as a result
will be made as soon as possible and will be announced here.

Please note that it is not a "ranking" system in the sense of purporting to
show the relative abilities of players, and will not be a primary source for
the purposes of picking teams within the squad. It can't be, because we are
obliged to (attempt to) pick the teams according to ability, while the
Retention Points are designed to assess a kind of overall value to us as a
County and enable us to make objective decisions regarding retention.

It will be reviewed as a matter of course at the end of the year, but tweaks
may also be made during the season if deemed absolutely necessary. While we
have gone to great efforts to do all we can to get it right from the start,
as someone who makes systems like this for a living I can assure everyone
that it is far from easy!

I should also make it clear that in order to try to make sure that we always
have enough players, we will in future do all we can to ensure that we have
at least 36 confirmed attendees by the Friday evening. We will also be inviting
ALL reserve list players to come along and support the teams, even if they
are not expected to be used. As well as helping to ensure that we have enough
players this will give them the opportunity to demonstrate their genuine
interest and to get to know their potential teammates which should in turn
help with team spirit etc if/when they are used.

All this is to some extent a work in progress. We are doing all we
can to move in the right direction but as with any significant changes there
is of course an element of "suck it and see". So please bear with us and
keep things positive and constructive Smiling
