London Juniors Win Region 7 Title

Inter CountyLondon's Junior Team took Region 7 by storm in 2008 to win their section by a massive 35 points over their nearest rivals, and earning themselves a place at the National Finals for the first time in 14 years.

The Juniors have been strong, committed and focussed all season and Team Manager Debbie Pople was delighted with their success. "I am so proud of my boys!", she beamed. "Not only have they won the region, but 7 of the squad have earned themselves England Trials. Joe Prince, Joe Cunningham, Eno Idiong and Adam Coppen in the Under 21's and Frank Costello, Mario Vogli and Jordan O'Connor in the Juniors. Good luck to them all!".

For captain Joe Prince, the National Finals at Great Yarmouth in March will be his last match as a Junior, but it would be a fitting end to his junior career for him to see his team lift the Junior National Inter County Champions' trophy. With 7 England trialists in the side, who would bet against it?

Whilst entry for the Open Event will be restricted to CDPL players only until 10 January, the Ladies Event is open to the first 16 ladies to pay their 10 entry either to Hannah Edwards at Rileys or to myself (Sarah Macmullen) or Paul Saxton. The 2008 London Open Report

With a total prize fund of over 700 up for grabs, the London Open saw 60 entrants for the main event, 18 juniors and 6 ladies descend upon JFK's on Sunday. With a field that size and a decent match distance it was no surprise to see the Ladies event being the first to be completed.

    The 2008 London Open

CompetitionsThe London Open takes place at JFKs, Rye Lane, Peckham on Sunday December 7th.

This year it will be made up of 3 events. An Open Event, a Junior Open and a Ladies Open.

The main Open Event starts at 12pm and is limited to 64 runners and is 10 to enter. The first 64 entrants to pay their entry money will be guaranteed their places with JFKs boosting the prize fund by a further 50.

The Ladies London Open and Junior London Open events are both just 5 to enter and will be limited to 32 entrants for each. The Junior London Open is for under 18s only. JFKs are also adding 25 to the prize fund for each event.

In addition to the pool there will be a cash poker table from 2pm.

    Sean Halligan Wins Surrey Singles

CompetitionsLondon A Team regular, Sean Halligan came through a strong 64 man field to win the Surrey Singles event at Rileys, Purley Way, Croydon at the weekend.

Despite having to come back from 2-0 down in the opening round, Sean had a reasonably untroubled route to the quarter finals where he met bookies favourite, Steve Petty. Early frames were traded but Sean won a couple of tactical battles to go 3-2 up and then never looked back to run out a 5-2 winner.

The ever improving Hugh Telford (also from Croydon League) was Sean's semi final opponent who was despatched 6-3 before unlikely finalist Simon le Marchant was all that stood between Sean and the title.

The final was fast, with Sean potting everything in sight and the cue ball, seemingly on a piece of string. He romped into an early lead of 3-0 within ten minutes. Simon then managed to pull one back and had a chance in the next but he failed to convert the chance. Sean nicked it and then never dropped another frame, taking the final 7-1. Sean played some awesome stuff in the final and never really gave Simon a look in. Both players were deserving of their final spots but Sean was the deserved winner on the day. Well done to Sean and also Simon for a marvellous effort.

Prince is crowned National Under 18's Champion

CompetitionsCongratulations to Joe Prince for winning the Under 18s National Junior Championship on Sunday 2nd November.

It was another great weekend in Chatham where six of our boys entered the competitions.

In the under 16s event Jordan O'Connor reached the quarter finals and Frank Costello the semi but was knocked out by John Bowkett (Leics). In the other semi Kingsley Peak (Suffolk) beat Ben Clark (Essex). In the final Kingsley Peak beat John Bowkett 6-2 so congratulations to them all.

In the under 18s event there were a few surprise exits. In the semi finals our Joe Prince beat Jamie McGauley (Herts) 6-2. The other nail biting semi saw the shock exit of Steve Petty (Surrey) to young Joe O'Connor (Leics) 6-5.

The stage was now set for the two Joes, Prince v O'Connor to battle out the final. Both boys had played well all weekend and it was a closely matched contest with our Joe winning to take the title 7-6.

    Congratulations go to Joe O'Connor (who is only 12) and a massive W E L L D O N E to Joe Prince.

Thanks goes to Judi Collins (England Junior Manager) and her team for two smoothly run competitions.

London v Berkshire Ladies Team Match Report

    Inter County

    London 23 v 21 Berkshire

This match was close all the way. London took an early lead but were pegged back to 6-5 up after the first set. The second sent also went London's way 6-5, however the third set went to Berkshire 7-4, tying the scores at 14-14 each. It went 15-15 and remained close until Berkshire took a 21-19 lead. With London staring a possible defeat in the face we rallied well to take the last 4 frames, Lucy Nettleingham playing a blinder in the last to take the win.

Captain Gill Buckingham was our player of the match with a solid 4/4 frames. Sue Studman and Sarah Long both got 3/4. Both Sue and Sarah have an outside chance of gaining an England Trial.

The last match of the season is away at Hampshire next month but the girls have a prior engagement at Great Yarmouth as London Devils and London Angels take on the best ladies in the country in the Ladies National Interleague Cup. Good luck to both sides.
