A cue is like an extension to your arm for many players. Some people keep their's for years while others replace them every 6 months. How long have you owned your current cue?

  B team bashes Kent
by: johnny kelly, 26-03-2009 02:02 PM (#1)

We arrived at Kent confident of winning our 2nd match in row to get our campaign of to the start we wanted.
After battling through the heavy traffic, most of us got the at 1pm instead of our planned 12:30 and never got the practice we had planned to have before the match, but we did have time for a quick meeting before we started.
i had dropped 2 players to the C team for the day, Tony Bailey who wasn't present at our first match and Rob Chalmers who although has been playing well lately , did only get 1/4 against berkshire. both players went on to do play their part against Kent with Tony running away with a star performance 4/4 on the day.
We had a few people absent due to work commitments and the fact that our match clashed with Mothering Sunday.
All i asked of the players was to carry on where we left of and i would expect and hope that we could win each set 8-3. This you may think might be a bit ambitious , but i know my team and know what we are capable of.
New player to the team Etienne Wagner started the ball rolling with the first frame of the day. We then went on to win the first set 7-4 and the second set 9-2 to get us back on track for what we were hoping to achieve.
so at this point we were 16-6 up and on course even though we had already threw away a few frames , but so had Kent, so that score was a fair reflection the match.
We then took it upon ourselves to throw away frame after frame , players seem to drop their heads , lose their confidence, play the wrong shots and go he wrong way about their clearances . All this even though we were coasting the match. subsequently we lost this 3rd set 7-4 to let Kent back into a match that they should of already lost.
we managed to win the last set 7-4 to close out the match 27-17 even though we again made some sloppy mistakes to throw away yet more frames.

On an individual level, Kyle Merrigan and Michael brown pretty much continued where they left off in our lst match with steady performances.
MOM go's to Jamie fay who just edges out Etienne Wagner , both getting 4/4. Jamie played with a confidence that almost had won his frames before he had even chalked his cue, his arrogance and full on attitude scared his opponents before they even picked up their cues.
The rest of the team played well below what i know they are capable of, but with that said , it just shows what a strong team of players we have when we can get away with only playing at 50% and still win the match by a clear 10 frames. The stregth in depth we have is scary at times and is what wins regional titles.
I'm confident that we are on the right track and by the time we meet Surrey in our 5th match we will be stronger , more settled , will be getting a better performance throughout the team and will be really enjoying our pool.

4/4 Etienne Wagner
3/4 Kyle Merrigan
4/4 Jamie Fay
3/4 John Kelly
2/4 Stephen Wallace
1/4 Joe Cunningham
2/4 Adam Coppen
2/4 Robbie Robb
2/4 Alex Lawrence
2/4 Michael Brown
2/4 Bri Chudasama

Next match at home to Sussex 19th April.

Well said John boy! Obviously stepping down from the A team this season was a personal choice and i hope this will give other B team members added confidence to go out and win frames. this season i could have had a good run in the A team but think 2009 is the year the B team spank the region !!!!!1st place

Good summary mate.

Have to admit I was well below par, no excuses, up to me to practice more and get back to the level I should be at.
The third set cost us a very good score but as you say it's good to see the strength in depth and get a score
like that even when we are not all playing at our best.

Busy few weeks for everyone coming up with Interleague qualifiers and a trip to Yarmouth so hopefully we should all
be in great form for the next home game against Sussex.

A couple of other things.....

i was pleased about the way Tony and Rob accepted being dropped to the C team. they didn't moan or drop their heads on got on with the job in hand.

i was pleased with the fact that 2 of the players able to attend ( Darren Baker and Paul McHale ), were straight on the phone to me after the match to find out how they team got on.

i was not impressed by the fact that Eno decided to go and play football instead of attending. I have told Jeremy that Eno can now no longer concider himself part of the B team set up and will now be part of the C team ( if he wants )?
i will no longer be sending him text messages or trying to arrange lifts for him and that go's for anyone else who conciders themselves more important than the team.

Yes Johnny, I think you've pretty much said it all there - well done son!

Well done Fayman and Etienne. It is a huge help having such strong players leading the way up at the front. I just hope we can keep you both for the season.

Despite frustratingly throwing winning frames away - this was still a good victory for us. If I remember correctly, this time last year we were not getting these results.

Again, I must reiterate that I am, very much so, enjoying playing in the B team representing London. The team spirit is good and people now seem happy with how things are being run.

I think that the fear of being dropped is having a positive effect on our team. People now CARE about winning as they want to keep their place in the team and as a result has given us two healthy victories so far this season.

I don't want to end on a sour note, but I did want to mention one moan. Towards the end of the match, once the match was won, our team seemed to disappear. I know that there was quite a dramatic ending to the C team match and some people went over to watch- but we still had 3 or 4 frames left to play.

If we are going to be taking as many wins as possible from these teams we need to support our players in every frame of the match. In these last few frames, it was only the Kent 'Indians' who were making the noise and supporting their players.

3-4 extra frames would have turned this good win into an excellent win - especially after seeing surreys 31 frame win. :-(

Apart from that moan and the headache traffic in Lewisham on the way there, it was a great day for us B team bods!

Looking forward to the next match.

Class dismissed!

Mr B!
